What are you thankful for?

Who’s ready to eat a ridiculous amount of food, take a quick snooze (aka sleep the entire afternoon,) and watch football?! We, at BH, sure are!

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is but a day away…

Chances are, you’ve made a few trips to the grocery store, have been busy finalizing holiday plans, and baking an endless amount of pumpkin pie to gear up for the big day…but have you taken a moment to think about what you’re thankful for this Thanksgiving?

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of not only the holiday season, but of life itself. We tend to get swept up in our thoughts, our jobs, the complications in our lives… and rarely pause to think about the things that we love and cherish — or the things that are actually going well.

It’s for this reason we want to dedicate this blog post solely to the things we are thankful for at BH. As we take a moment to pause and reflect on the things that are so near and dear to hearts, we hope you will do the same.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

005I am thankful for my family and friends, getting together, having food, drinks and lots of laughs! I am also very thankful for my job at BH, working with such great people, and having an owner who is so giving to his employees. Life is good! I hope my BH family has a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.1121130948a

Jennifer Fountain SquareMy family and friends are the most important things in my life.  (My “family” includes my residents, my BH family and immediate family!) Thanksgiving is a great reminder of how important having these support systems is. Days would be empty without the unconditional love those people in our lives give to us … and who isn’t grateful for turkey? 😉

She says there’s never a dull moment in her life!

Turkey Day Traditions

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just a week away? Just thinking about the upcoming holiday warms your heart a little, doesn’t it?

There’s something about spending time with your family and friends, stuffing your face with your favorites, and taking a nap – that you just can’t beat.

There’s also something about the unique traditions we’ve built with our loved ones, our communities, and even our companies that make the holiday even more special.

Our BH family, for example, has many traditions this time of year. Many of our apartment communities host annual food drives, holiday events and conduct turkey giveaways (who wouldn’t want a free turkey?) as a way to give thanks!

At the same time, each of us at BH has our own unique and individual traditions we look forward to each year… which is what we’re here to talk about today.

To help you get to know a few more of our BH family members, we’ve asked some of our on-site personnel to tell us about some of their Thanksgiving Day traditions.

If you don’t currently have a tradition, we’re hoping the following submissions will help spark a few ideas for you, or at least help ‘get you in the spirit.’ 🙂

A Few Cuban Favorites

Submitted be Rachel Acosta, Property Manager, Siesta Lago Condominiums

Edited tday cubanAhh, Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite holidays because it’s all about the FOOD! I come from a big Cuban family and our traditions are a little different than most Americans’. Typically, the women in the family spend the whole day cooking, the men sit around and play Dominoes, and the cousins run around and cause trouble. Thanksgiving food in our family is something we look forward to all year long! Lots of garlic and Mojo is used for the turkey, and the sides are to-die-for! We create a candied pecan sweet potato casserole, homemade black beans, Hashbrown Casserole, Garlic Yuca, and a handful of other dishes that we interchange between holidays. You will always find a few soft loaves of Cuban bread to be served with some delicious spreadable butter, or dipped in the tableside Mojo. We finally sit down to eat around 4-5 pm, which is a little later than most, but hey… we run on Cuban Time. 🙂Me aug09

Rachel Acosta has worked at Siesta Lago Condominiums since 2005 and has been their property manager since 2009. She says she loves to cook and is currently writing a cookbook! When she’s not working or cooking, she enjoys spending time with her 6-year-old daughter Juliet, who she says has a wonderful sense of humor! Rachel says she loves working for a company like BH, and has never been happier!

Terrace at ButlerStockings on the Stairway

Submitted by Lucas Rogers, Assistant Property Manager, Cameron Lakes Apartments

We start our dinner at around 2 p.m., and then rest up! We then get our Christmas stockings out and decorate them with our own personal flair, often times including our names, photos, our favorite sports teams, etc.

The next step in this process is my favorite, and is something pretty unique! Our entire family then hangs all of the stockings together on the railing of the stairs. Cool, huh?

He is originally from a small town in West Virginia.

mimosa brunchMaxin’ and Relaxin’!

Submitted be Richard Dominguez, Property Manager, Bella Vida at Coyote Ridge Apartments

Every year at Thanksgiving, I usually get together with my family at The Driskill Hotel for Thanksgiving brunch. That way, nobody has to cook or clean and we can sit and talk… and, of course, have mimosas! It really is a nice treat – especially the mimosas. 🙂  Afterwards, we usually catch the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV, relax and enjoy the day.

Richard photoRichard Dominguez has been with BH since November 2009, and has worked in Austin, San Antonio, College Station and the Dallas area as a property manager. He loves all kinds of music, going to concerts and relaxing by the water — be it a coast or lake —  enjoying the breeze and spending time with his closest friends.
