You complete me

The holiday season is upon us, and we’re shining light on the things that mean the most to us! We’ve asked some of our BH employees to tell us about the items that complete their holiday displays, mantles, and Christmas trees each and every year… the things the holiday season just wouldn’t be the same without!

What holiday decoration makes your season a little brighter each year?

nutcracker new

My favorite holiday decoration is my Nutcracker! I bought it at a ballet I attended a few years ago, and have put it on display every holiday season since. This little guy is especially meaningful to me because it reminds me of ballet and dance in general, which has always been a huge part of my life.

meMegan Seeman is a Marketing Specialist in the BH Corporate Office. When she’s not working, she’s dancing (no surprise there,) reading, writing, hanging out with her husband, or shooting and editing videos.

My favorite holiday decoration has always been a musical ornament my parents got me when I was about six. The ornament is from a Christmas market we went to for many years in Okawville, IL. While the ornament itself isn’t fancy, it is still very sentimental and goes onto the main tree at my parents’ house every year. Even after 20 years it still plays, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

photo 1Tasha Kline works as a Marketing and Training Specialist in the BH corporate office.  When she’s not working, Tasha likes spending her time with friends and family. She also enjoys shopping, cooking, baking and decorating (as you can usually tell by the amount of decorations and yummy treats at her desk on a regular basis.)

Thanks for reading this week’s edition of the BH Blog. Happy holidays from all of us here at BH!

In the spirit of giving

The holiday season is in full swing, and we’re in the spirit of giving!

It’s something we’re passionate about year-round at BH, often implementing food drives and fundraisers at our properties.

We’re also weeks away from launching our “BH Gives Back” campaign, which will allow BH employees to help out in the community and contribute to a cause that’s near and dear to their hearts.

As we gear up for our new initiative, we thought we would share some of the ways BH is making a difference right now.

How are you giving back this holiday season?

ang and samHolly Jolly Jeans!

During the month of December, corporate employees were allowed to wear jeans with a $20 donation. The names of several different charities were given and after a random drawing, the chosen charity for 2013 was Children & Families of Iowa.

C and F of IowaChildren & Families of Iowa has been restoring hope, building futures and changing lives for Iowa’s most vulnerable children, families and communities for 125 years. Their organization was started in 1888 as a response to a growing need for safe, loving homes for abandoned, neglected and “unwanted” children in Iowa. Since then, they estimate they have touched over half a million lives. Their organization has grown by adhering to one, basic principle: every child, every family deserves to be safe.

In years past, a check has been sent or dropped off to the charity of the year. However, this year, we decided to try something new. We enlisted the help of volunteers to assist with the purchasing and wrapping of gifts. We were assigned four families, all of which were a single parent household with a range of one to four children each.

We all really enjoyed making this Christmas memorable for the four local families!

Denton Animal Shelter Food Drive

002Here at La Colina Apartments, located in Denton, Texas, we’ve been collecting donations for the Denton Animal Shelter over the past several weeks. We filled a number of large bags with dog and cat food, several packages of pet treats, dog leashes, collars, food bowls, a few blankets/beds,  tons of treat bones, and pet toys!

Bullard Creek Toys for TotsHere at Bullard Creek Apartments, located in Tyler, Texas, we’ve had a great time conducting our Toys for Tots campaign. We collected dozens of toys for the less fortunate in our community!

bella vida toys 4 totsOur leasing staff here at Bella Vida, located in Carrollton, Texas, built an impressive Toys 4 Tots donation box to kick off our campaign. The AAGD even asked us if we would put our box on display at the Annual Toys For Tots Banquet – hosted by the AAGD and US Marine Corps.

We hope this week’s blog will help inspire you to help make someone’s holiday season a little brighter.

Thanks for reading!

Our greatest gifts

‘Tis the season of giving!

Chances are, you thought a lot about holiday gifts over Thanskgiving, whether you camped out at Best Buy days before Black Friday, have been busy making a list for yourself, or writing down who wants what, and what you plan to buy whom this holiday season. (Say that three times fast!)

Because your mind is already spinning with toys, I-Pads, new releases, and giant flat screens, we thought we’d take your mind off gifts of the future, and focus on some of your favorite gifts from the past. To help us do just that, we’ve asked some of our BH family members to tell us about some of the special things they have received during the holiday season, on anniversaries, birthdays, or “just because.” (Those are best kinds of presents, aren’t they?)

We hope you’ll reflect on some of the specials things you’ve received over the years as you read through today’s post.

What’s been your greatest gift?

My favorite gift I’ve ever received is my high school graduation present.  My parents bought me a pre-owned ’95 Jaguar XJS convertible, which I unfortunately ran into to the ground.  I definitely would have appreciated it more now if I still had it today.

VRVince Roman is the assistant manager at The Preserve at Cress Creek Apartments in Naperville, Illinois. He also has been the bassist and backing vocalist for the Chicago indie-rock back Sisero for six years now. He says they have released two self-produced albums that he is very proud of.  He also says he’s taken flying lessons and would love to start them up again.

Megs photoMy all-time favorite gift is my camera, which I received for Christmas in 2011. It’s not very fancy, but it allows me to take photos that capture feelings. I love taking pictures of nature, people, close-up shots and landscapes. They all have different meanings and provoke different feelings. I love capturing those moments. The photo on the left is one of my favorites photos I’ve taken with my camera!

Megan FrankneMegan Franken is a leasing consultant at The Enclave Hartland in Lexington, Kentucky. She attended the University of Central Florida, where she received a degree in Anthropology. She lived in Mexico this year, and spent two months living in Romania in 2011. She said she loves to travel and also loves food. (She said she will try any food once!)

Our next two ‘greatest gifts’ belong to two animal lovers, who also happen to work at one of BH’s pet-friendly communities!

Lisa Vinings at Ft MitchellMy favorite gift would be my dog Ollie. He was given to me five years ago and is my best friend!

Lisa For the blogLisa Crawford is a leasing agent at The Vinings at Ft. Mitchell Apartments in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. She loves spending time with her son, enjoys sewing, crafts, fishing and camping! She also loves to cook and bake.

GiftMy favorite gift would be my Boston Terrier “Papi.” My wife and I received him from my mother-in-law.

pictureJonathon Turner is a leasing agent at The Vinings at Ft. Mitchell Apartments in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. He enjoys hanging out with his wife, cooking, canoeing, antiquing,  singing karaoke, & making funny Youtube videos. He also plays guitar and says romantic comedies are his guilty pleasure. (Don’t judge!)

There you have it, folks!

Thank you for reading this week’s edition of the BH Blog!
