Pantone’s Color of the Year: Marsala

Every year Pantone goes through an intense process of picking out the color of the year (read about that process here). They’ve travelled the world to pick up cues on what people are wearing, what people are putting in their homes, what’s being designed for cars, and more, and this year, the color they’ve chosen is Marsala. Pantone’s description of it states, Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness.” In today’s blog we’re going to give you some tips on incorporating this tasteful hue into your life this year.

  1. Pair it with neutrals. marsala-carpet

If you have neutral colored furniture, an easy way to incorporate this color (or any color) is with throw pillows. They are inexpensive and then next year when the new Pantone Color of the Year comes out, you won’t have spent your money on an out of season color. A few other ways to pair Marsala with your neutrals is to get an area rug, a throw blanket, or even a side lamp. The good thing about the Color of the Year this year is that it is a color that really pairs well with neutrals, and while it is bold, it’s something that can work in your home for a long time, unlike some past PCOTY choices like Emerald, for example.

  1. Get an accent piece. marsala-diseño-interior

The great thing about this year’s PCOTY is that it really goes with everything. If you’re really loving this year’s color and are up for some change, try a big accent piece. An accent chair can really bring life into a room and can be that pop of color you need to tie everything together. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try an accent wall! If neither of these suit you, there are tons of other accent furniture options, light fixtures, wall hangings (think mirrors, paintings, etc.), and more that can transform your space with just the right accent piece you need.

  1. Choose a room. farmhouse-kitchen

If you like this year’s PCOTY but you don’t want to go Marsala crazy, choose one room to accent with it. Maybe add pillows to your living room, or a painting and new comforter to your bed. Your kitchen or dining rooms could definitely be made over with the color, but you’d probably have to live with it a little bit longer. All you have to do here get new placements or new chairs for your table. Or check out this island. That splash of color transforms the whole kitchen and looks pretty amazing.

  1. Not just decorating.

While we would love for everyone to incorporate this gorgeous color into their homes, there are plenty of other ways to incorporate it into your lives too. It is easily incorporated into your wardrobe into pants, a shirt, skirt, dress, shoes, jewelry and more. If it’s time to update your appliances, plenty of them are following the trends and providing Marsala color options. If you’re thinking of bigger options, your next car purchase could even be made in Marsala!

Here’s a look at some of the PCOTY of the past. What do you think of Marsala compared to some of the past years? We love it but we want to know your thoughts! Do you plan to incorporate it into your life?
