April showers bring May flowers. Now that May is upon us, let’s start getting those flowers blooming! Plants do so much when added to your space. Not only do they bring much-desired color, but they help air quality, make you happier, and can even provide helpful things to use in your home. You could grow some veggies or herbs, or get an aloe plant and use the aloe in many ways. Sometimes, starting your gardening season, whether it’s in a field, a backyard, or an apartment can be daunting. Here are some ways to make gardening fun in your space and to work for you!
- Get Easy Plants
Maybe this is your first time taking on the responsibility of caring for a plant, or maybe you just haven’t been very successful at keeping your previous plants alive. A great option for this is a low-maintenance plant that doesn’t need much TLC. Take a look at this article for some great examples of these kinds of plants, and also, if they are safe for your pet!
- Think Outside the Planter
If you’re a more experienced apartment gardener, you probably already have your plants picked out in your mind and have added their watering schedule to your daily routine. But what about the planter or pots you display/store them in? Have you thought about those? While plants add a great pop of color to any room, why not add another and use a fun pot? Don’t have one or can’t find one? Pick up a reasonably priced one and paint it! It’ll make the planting process even more fun!
- Add Some Drama!
Most of the time when you think of a house plant, the first thing that comes to your mind is probably a potted flower or something similar that grows straight up out of the dirt. Add some drama to your space by getting a plant that can climb (i.e. ivy) or with long stems and leaves (i.e. spider plant). There are so many plants out there that grow in different ways, we recommend having at least one to make a good eye-catching focal point in your home.
- Grow Plants You Can Use
Gardening is a hobby that requires much commitment. Even if you get a low-maintenance plant, you will need to water it consistently over its lifetime. If you’re going to put the commitment and effort in, we suggest growing a plant you can use. Do you like cooking with herbs and spices? Of course! The worst is when you’re finishing a dish and you realize you just ran out of basil, or cilantro, or your herb of choice. We suggest growing these in your own kitchen garden. Take a look at this list for some ideas of the herbs you can grow. Also, don’t forget to take advantage of your patio or balcony! Most plants that people grow in their backyard will grow well on your balcony given the right setting and environment. Tomatoes and peppers are a common choice, and produce tons of veggies!
