Essential Oils: FAQ

Essential oils have become increasingly popular in recent years. With hundreds of varieties and even more uses, it’s no wonder why interest has grown as well as confusion. We asked our personal BH expert on essential oils some of the most frequently asked questions. Read on to find out their amazing uses!

 

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are volatile liquids concentrated from plants that are somewhat silky to the touch. Not only are essential oils highly therapeutic, they have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-parasitic properties.

How do they work?

With hundreds of vitamins and organic compounds, essential oils act as adaptogens that promote homeostasis. Many work on the peripheral and central nervous system. Essential oils are non-greasy and require only a few drops to have tremendous effects on emotional wellbeing, physical health or spiritual mindfulness.

How did you come to start using them?

I’ve been using oils for over three years now. I was introduced to them when out to dinner with friends. I had burned myself using a flat iron and she had lavender essential oil in her purse. It took the stinging sensation out within minutes. From there, I began researching ways that I could introduce oils to my family in ways of topical application, cleaning products and diffusing them in our home.

 

What benefits do you find from using them?

I find the most important benefits to using oils are increased immunity, allergy symptom relief for my husband and improved sleep for our daughter.

What’s one thing you’d say to someone who wanted to start using them?

Research everything! Benefits, side effects, children & pets, distillation, proper uses (varies with each oil sometimes). A reference guide is a great place to start.

 

What is one misconception about essential oils you run into?

The biggest misconception is that because they are natural, they are all safe. Many of them should be used with caution.

 

What essential oils do you use the most?

Peppermint, lavender, lemon and eucalyptus.

 

Are there different brands and if so which one do you like the most?

I’ve used Mountain Rose Herbs, Doterra, Young Living, Plant Therapy, Eden’s Garden and Aura Cacia. Plant Therapy is my favorite so far.

What is something you want people to know about essential oils?

Use caution with essential oils around children, elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Know the adverse side effects! Nearly all benefits can be achieved through topical application.

 

If you could only use one oil what would it be?

Lavender!
